As is true with most kittens that are specially-bred, Himalayan kitten care is something that must be taken very seriously. For example, the fact that they are a long-haired breed implies that Himalayan kittens require a lot of brushing. The “squished up” or “pug” face Himalayan kittens also pose two major health problems for them as well. One is the fact that their eyes tear up a lot because of the compressed tear ducts, and the other has something to do with the shortened breathing tube, making breathing difficult for the little darlings. This is why Himalayan kitten care involves daily (and thorough) wiping of their faces to get rid of any grime that could lead to eye and nose infections. If you live in an environment that is hot and dusty, you may want to reconsider getting a Himalayan kitten – such environments just make Himalayan kitten care all the more difficult.
Himalayan kitten care also involves frequent and consistent visits to the veterinarian – more so than most other kittens because of their physical problems. Throw in another common problem among purebreds – inbreeding due to commercialization – and you get to see a whole other host of problems that you have to address, such as polycystic kidney disease, deformities in the joints, and organ abnormalities. If you think they are worth it, then just keep these in mind.
In this section of the site, we will be posting detailed articles on proper Himalayan kitten care and a directory of veterinarians, arranged according to city/location. There is nothing up here yet, but do please check back for updates.
